Blackpool striker DJ Campbell is dreaming of playing for England on the back of his breakthrough season in the English Premier League.
The 29-year-old was playing non-League football only six years ago but, having scored eight goals this league campaign, Campbell believes he can wear the England shirt under manager Fabio Capello.
“I mean, obviously it would be a dream for me to play for England and to play for my country. And it would be great for Blackpool,” he said.
“I’ve scored six (goals) in seven (games) now, so things are going really well. Hopefully, fingers crossed, England have got a friendly away to Denmark, so if I could get in the squad I would be over the moon. I’d be really chuffed.”
Campbell said he had been spurred on by the national team chance handed to fellow striker Jay Bothroyd, plying his trade for Cardiff City in the Championship.
“Yeah, he’s brilliant, Fabio. He gives people chances, and hopefully he can give me a chance. It’s a dream for me. It’s a dream for every young player to play for their county and I’m no different,” he said.
“Fingers crossed, if I can keep scoring and keep up the good work in the pitch for Blackpool and hopefully we can see. Hopefully I’ll be picked.”
Campbell said the fact that Blackpool had proven wrong most English football fans with positive results this campaign will help his cause in trying to reach national selection.
“People said we’d do well to get 10 points. To prove them wrong is a great achievement, although we know we still have a lot of hard work to do. But I’d like to think we’ve made people take us seriously,” he said.
