After a slow start to life at Anfield, Andy Robertson has since become quite the revelation at left-back for Liverpool.
Robertson has been one of the Reds’ most consistent performers following his instalment into the first team by Jurgen Klopp, impressing many in the process.
The 24-year-old, however, could have so easily found himself participating in a relegation battle last term instead of playing in a Champions League final.
The Breakdown
In an interview with Open Goal (via Sky Sports), Robertson revealed Stoke City were interested in signing him from Hull City in a transfer that would have later seen the Scotland international relegated to the Championship.
“Stoke were quite interested in me,” Robertson told Open Goal. “Mark Hughes had liked me and I think there was a wee bit of chat with them. So I was thinking they were a really good option; I think they finished top 10 that season and I was trying to get my head on a move to Stoke.”
Robertson, of course, would go on to join Liverpool, which has proven to be the right career move for him to say the least. Under Klopp, the former Hull man has developed into a left-back who is very effective in both halves of the pitch.
With his pace and crossing ability, going forward, Robertson has given Liverpool another efficient outlet in attack. But unlike most other modern-day full-backs, the Queen’s Park youth product also has the defensive side of the role on lock.
All in all, Robertson’s decision to turn down Stoke has ended up being massive for both him and Liverpool.
