In defence, Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the only top-flight defenders with more goal involvements than White.

The stats also suggest there's no room in the squad for Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo. The midfielder looks set to make a late charge for a place on the plane after shining for the Red Devils and impressing in England's friendlies against Belgium and Brazil. Yet Mainoo's late burst onto the scene means the midfielder has only made 14 appearances this season, giving him little opportunity to impress the statisticians.

Southgate has said the door is still open for White to return to the England squad, although it remains to be seen if the defender will change his stance. The England manager also talked up Mainoo after being impressed by the Manchester United academy graduate.

He told reporters: "He gives us a different profile of midfield player to anything else we’ve got and we’re really pleased with what he's done. You can’t believe his age really. His attributes are there for everybody to see, that ability to receive under pressure and ride challenges, to manipulate the ball in tight areas."
