Adam Blackmore of BBC Radio Solent has provided a transfer update on Southampton’s January intentions, following Ralph Hasenhuttl’s pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Leicester this weekend.
What’s the word, then?
Well, Blackmore tweeted that the Saints are still in the market – ‘especially’ for full-backs after Hasenhuttl made the revelation on Thursday afternoon.
Southampton are looking fairly weak in the full-back department as the former RB Leipzig boss only has Ryan Bertrand, Yan Valery and Cedric available to him in the wide defensive areas as senior options, while that position looks set to get even weaker in the near future as the latter revealed that he plans to leave the club at the end of the campaign when his contract expires.
Southampton do have the young Jake Vokins at left-back as well, although Hasenhuttl hinted that the teenager isn’t quite ready defensively when saying: “Jake’s very, very forward oriented but the reverse gear sometimes takes a bit longer, especially the duels in defence are not always clinical and strong enough.
“It’s up to us to work with him and make him better and this is what we’ll do.â€
Another reiteration of Hasenhuttl’s transfer intentions
The Austrian coach has already revealed that Southampton “will do something” in the market in terms of bolstering the full-back positions, stating that it is “absolutely clear” that the Saints must reinforce this area and that is it “definitely” a position that the club are looking at.
“It is absolutely clear that we must do something with the full-back positions. This is definitely a position we’re looking at for the moment and we will do something.”
So, Hasenhuttl certainly seems intent of adding another full-back to his ranks, and given that the previous update was reported by Sky Sports on the 19th December, Blackmore’s tweet has provided us with a fresher piece of news on what the Southampton boss wants to do this month – the fact that he has mentioned it to the media twice suggests that it truly is an area that the 52-year-old desperately wants to see additions in.
