Liverpool’s January transfer window dealings have been questioned by the TalkSport presenter Alex Crook who has predicted them to miss out on Europe completely.
What’s the latest?
It was a fairly quiet window for the Reds, in truth, after what started out with the impressive addition of the Dutch forward Cody Gakpo.
That deal aside, the only other movement on Merseyside saw youngster Rhys Wiliams return to Anfield from his loan spell with Blackpool.
And this comes at a time when the Reds are struggling in the Premier League and face the prospect of not playing Champions League football next season on their current form.
Speaking to TalkSport, Crook slammed their transfer window as “strange” as has admitted he does not hold high expectations for their remaining games of the 2022/23 campaign:
“This is not going to go down well on the red half of Merseyside. I can feel the cult of Klopp will be gunning for me but Liverpool strange window for them.
“Cody Gakpo stolen away from Manchester United was he the player they really need? They’ve got big deficiencies in midfield, I know they’re trying to rectify that with a big-money move in the summer for Jude Bellingham but if they’re not in the Champions League, is he really going to move to Anfield?
“And this is a bold claim. I think there’s a big chance Liverpool don’t play any European football next season.”
Low expectations
It really has been a campaign which will stick in the memory of Liverpool fans for all the wrong reasons with the Reds currently slumped in ninth place of the Premier League table.
Brighton & Hove Albion added insult to injury over the weekend after the Seagulls knocked the current holders out of the FA Cup leaving Liverpool just the Champions League to play for.
And they will face the enormous task of getting past Real Madrid in the last 16 tie coming up in the next couple of weeks given they failed to beat them last season when they were actually in form.
There have been cries for midfield reinforcement at Anfield ahead of the January window and that is exactly what they did not do.
Liverpool signed Arthur Melo in the summer and the Spaniard is yet to even play a minute in the league under Jurgen Klopp having sustained an injury early on in his Liverpool career.
There have been reports suggesting Liverpool would be interested in bringing Jude Bellingham to Merseyside in the summer.
However, if they end the season on the same trajectory, you have to wonder why the Englishman would choose Liverpool over the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid when they could well be not playing in Europe at all next season.
